The Seed
“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field, which indeed is the least of all the seeds; but when it is grown it is greater than the herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches.”
Consider the seed. It is a small object that is capable of producing something great. According to Wikipedia, it is “an embryonic plant enclosed in a protective outer covering.” Another reference calls it “a flowering plant's unit of reproduction, capable of developing into another such plant.”
The Bible uses “seed” as a metaphor 111 times in the Old and New Testament. In this particular passage, it is used to show how the smallest of seeds can become the greatest of plants and how God can take something so tiny and magnify it 100 fold.
The seed of a plant can do nothing on its own. It needs to be planted in dirt to flourish and grow. If left out it becomes food for the animals. Once planted though, it absorbs nutrients and water from its surroundings and sprouts the potential it contains. It pushes through the soil to the surface where it can absorb the light of the sun which allows it to continue its task of growing into the plant God designed it to become.
We are like the seed. On our own we can do nothing. Without nutrients, we become food for the wicked and wither away. In the beginning, we may face a dark and damp place but that time is short in comparison to the time we spring forth from our hard shell and reveal the goodness within us. Surrounded by encouragement, the Word of God and the hope of the Son, we can emerge and sprout the awesome potential buried deep within. Like the mustard seed, the least of us can become the greatest. We can flourish into a tree where others can nest among us and we can bear much fruit. This fruit is encouragement and love for our fellow seeds and support in their efforts to sprout their own capability and gifts.
In what state is your seed currently presiding? Are you exposed and lying on top of the ground or surrounded by darkness? Are you sprouting a little but in need to be watered and reaching for the Light of the Son? Like the seeds of plants, we have a purpose from God who has a plan for all of them to cover His Earth. Find your place, endure the darkness for a while and sprout the potential within you to become the greatest in the field.
And that is the Whole Truth. God Bless
